In the past, researchers have investigated chemotherapy toxicity but did not delve into specific chemotherapy regimens. In this new study, however, researchers were able to use claims data to identify and distinguish between different chemotherapy regimens for early-stage breast cancer. Using data on more than 3,000 patients from SEER and data on more than 9,000 patients from a nationwide employment claims database, the researchers evaluated patients according to age and chemotherapy regimens. They found that certain regimens were associated with an increased risk for hospitalization among different patients. Although further research is needed, the researchers concluded that the study results could help individualize therapy.
