T2 I think more would refer if palliative care was called supportive oncology. Same intent, less frightening. #bcsm #wordsmatter
— Don S Dizon (@drdonsdizon) July 29, 2014
We may be biased because he’s on our Editorial Board, but Dr. Don Dizon is a prolific tweeter who truly makes an effort to connect with peers and patients alike. A medical oncologist based in Boston who specializes in women’s and sexual health issues, Dr. Dizon tweets live from a number of oncology meetings, and regularly addresses social and emotional issues related to a cancer diagnosis.
He also often tweets under specific cancer topic hashtags (eg, #gyncsm [GYN social media]), so he’s a great resource for current issues and trends in oncology. One of the most special things about Dr. Dizon is the deeply personal and introspective approach he takes to being an oncologist—which is clearly not just a job for him—and his tweets reflect that.

— Otis Brawley (@OtisBrawley) February 4, 2014
Otis Brawley is a hematologist/oncologist at the Emory Winship Cancer Institute, and the Chief Medical Officer for the American Cancer Society. In the oncology world, he’s a champion for cancer prevention and control, and is considered an expert in the issue of disparities in cancer care.
Dr. Brawley truly understands the reach of social media in oncology, and participates in a number of cancer-related twitter chats and question and answer sessions, many of which are aimed at patients and their caregivers. He also provides insightful commentary on cancer research and current issues in oncology.

— Kevin Pho, M.D. (@kevinmd) July 29, 2014
Kevin Pho, MD is often referred to as “Social Media’s Leading Physician Voice” and although he’s not an oncologist his tweets are relevant to all medical practitioners and health care professionals.
He has his own blog, kevinmd.com/blog, where he comments on the most recent and relevant topics in medicine today, including the cost of care, communicating with patients, and practice management issues. He has recently written a book titled, “Establishing, Managing, and Protecting Your Online Reputation: A Social Media Guide for Physicians and Medical Practices”, which is a great resource for any medical professional who is looking to engage in social media but it questioning exactly how to do it.

Perhaps it goes without saying, but if you work in the oncology world, you should be aware of ASCO and definitely follow them on Twitter. Not only does ASCO’s twitter feed post links from their popular professional networking site, ASCO Connection, and provide information about their various meetings and symposia, but they also retweet comments and perspectives from many experts in the oncology world.
And, if you can’t attend the 2015 ASCO Annual Meeting, following their twitter feed will be the next best thing to being there in person.
